Antique door restoration work in Mallorca

Every piece of work you see here is a real door, from a real house in Mallorca.

Full restoration of an entrance door in Porto Petro / Parc Natural de Mondragó

2025

This door, when you looked at it up close before restoration, told you everything. The bottom was affected by moisture, and the ironwork had been darkening over the years. There's no mystery there: the first step is to stop and look carefully.

Assess where it's suffering, which parts still hold up and which ones have given out. A door like this cannot be fixed quickly and easily: it has to be done in stages, and done properly.

BEFORE

What was done

  1. I
    DIAGNOSIS

I started from the bottom, where the damage was. You have to open it up, clean it and honestly decide what can be saved and what needs to be redone.

  2. II
    STRUCTURE

I rebuilt the base so the door has proper support again and doesn't keep suffering in the same spot.

  3. III
    TREATMENT

I cleaned and treated the rest gradually, without overdoing it and without erasing what makes it special as an antique.

  4. IV
    HARDWARE

With the ironwork I did what I always do: dismantle, clean, polish, treat and leave them at just the right point — looking cared for but still their own.

  5. V
    PROTECTION

And finally, protection: because the job isn't to make it look good today — it's to make sure it looks just as good years from now.

Restoration of a seafront entrance door in La Rápida

2022

A seafront door is beautiful, but it suffers greatly. Salt, sun and moisture eat away at everything. The work here was about thinking ahead: getting it right today so the same problem doesn't come back tomorrow.

BEFORE
Lo que se hizo - Puerta de mar

What was done

  1. I

Deep cleaning until sound wood was reached.

  2. II

The ironwork was treated piece by piece, as you do with something of age: without rushing and with care.

  3. III

Weatherproofing treatment, which is what makes the difference.

  4. IV

Rain drip strips were fitted, because on a seafront door, if water settles at the bottom it eventually destroys everything. The drip strips allow water to run off and not accumulate at the base.

  5. V

Where there was moisture at the base, it was rebuilt and left solid.

RESULT

A seafront door, cared for and ready to last.

Restoration of doors on a farmhouse in Sant Jordi

Sant Jordi
2023

This work was on a farmhouse on the outskirts of Colonia de Sant Jordi.

The same process as always, in this profession there are no shortcuts: full stripping to remove all old layers and expose the wood, deep cleaning, treatment and reconstruction of damaged parts, and a complete woodworm and insect treatment to cut the problem at the root.

There was one detail that made the difference: every original nail was removed one by one, restored, treated against corrosion and put back in its place. It's a time-consuming job, but it's what keeps the door being itself.

Afterwards, a final finish with a specialist exterior protective product: to nourish the wood and prepare it to last.

The result is a pair of restored doors with all their original nails recovered — clean work, faithful to the piece and built to last.

BEFORE AND AFTER

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar?

If any of them apply, send me 3 photos (front, detail and edge) and I'll tell you the most recommended solution.

Restoration of an exterior door in Capdepera

2023

This door arrived with years of wear on it: layer after layer of paint applied one on top of another, and underneath, the wood crying out for air.

On top of that, the bottom section — always the part that suffers most — had given out completely.

BEFORE
Lo que se hizo - Puerta recuperada

What was done

  1. I

Stripping of multiple paint layers using a heat gun, removing them carefully without damaging the wood beneath.

  2. II

Removal of all remaining residue until the surface was clean and ready.

  3. III

Full reconstruction of the lower section, which was severely damaged by moisture.

  4. IV

Hardware: the usual process — dismantle, clean, treat and set in order so everything works properly and doesn't keep deteriorating.

  5. V

Woodworm and insect treatment to eliminate the problem.

  6. VI

Final finish with a specialist oil-based exterior product to nourish the wood and protect it from sun and weather.

RESULT

Door restored from scratch: clean, solid, with the lower section rebuilt and ready to last.

Antique doors in Felanitx

2022

These doors came from an old mill on the property. The owner wanted to reuse them in his country house and, to be honest, they were in very poor condition. The main problem was clear: wood with damage and sections affected by insects, and hardware that needed to be recovered if the door was going to work and last.

BEFORE
Lo que se hizo - Puerta de mar

What was done

  1. I

Full stripping to remove the old layers and see the actual wood.

  2. II

Repair of damage and replacement/treatment of affected sections.

  3. III

Wood treatment (including insect-affected areas) so the problem doesn't return.

  4. IV

Hardware: cleaning, anti-corrosion treatment and full service.

  5. V

Final finish with natural products and oils to protect and preserve.

RESULT

Doors ready to reuse: restored, protected and working well.

Entrance door repair

Campos, Mallorca
2022

In this case the work was on the doors of a very old house. The doors were stripped manually using steel wool, without sandpaper or aggressive machines, to avoid damaging the wood.

Afterwards a treatment was applied to eliminate woodworm, and all cracks and pores were repaired.

The door knockers, made of cast iron, were treated with the appropriate products to protect them from corrosion and restore their original elegance.

Although there are many types of finish, the client chose a treatment based on petroleum jelly and white spirit to nourish the wood and give it a natural colour.

Restoration of an entrance door in a house in Llucmajor

2019

This door in Llucmajor didn't need a reconstruction: it needed care and a gentle hand. It needed stripping away what had dulled it over the years and letting the wood speak again, without erasing its age.

BEFORE
Lo que se hizo - Puerta de mar

What was done

  1. I

I removed the old layers carefully, without rushing and without causing damage.

  2. II

I left the wood clean and ready, with the grain open and breathing.

  3. III

And I protected it, because the goal isn't for it to look good today — it's for it to last.

RESULT

A lighter, more vibrant door, with its character intact.

AFTER

Main door restored in Llucmajor

2020

This client wanted to restore his parents' house and have the door return to the state he had always known since childhood, so it was agreed to try not to «transform» it too much, so it kept the presence it had always had.

BEFORE
Lo que se hizo - Conservación

What was done

  1. I
    CRACKS

The cracks were treated one by one, with the right material for each type of opening. Not just filled over the top: first clean the inside, then fill, and let it settle before continuing.

  2. II
    CLEANING

Deep cleaning to truly prepare the surface, with no residue left that could later lift the finish. Skip this stage and you pay for it later.

  3. III
    CONSERVATION FINISH

A finish designed to protect without transforming: so the door remains what it is, with its colour and character, but with what it needs to withstand the passage of time.

RESULT

A sound and well-cared-for door, touched only as much as necessary — which is exactly what good conservation should look like.

Exterior wooden windows

Campos, Mallorca
2016

These are exterior windows with glass panes. Sometimes the glass has to be removed, as in this case, in order to restore the frame properly.

For windows facing the exterior, products are applied that protect them from sun and moisture..

Recovery of antique doors from a dairy farm for a house in Llucmajor

2017

These doors came with their own story: the client had some doors from a dairy farm that had belonged to her family, and she wanted to recover them to give them a second life and keep a beautiful memory.

And when you care about a door, you don't just want it to look decent; you want it to close properly and be strong.

Here the work was the kind you don't see in the first photo, but you feel every day.

BEFORE
Lo que se hizo - Puerta de mar

What was done

  1. I

I dismantled them from the inside, plank by plank, because the planks had come apart and, if you don't go in from the inside, you can't redo the joints and grooves that connect one plank to the next.

  2. II

I rejoined them from the inside so the door works as a single piece, without any play.

  3. III

I adjusted it so it closes cleanly, without rubbing.

  4. IV

I aimed for a uniform tone, so you can see the wood and everything looks as it should have always been.

  5. V

I dismantled and worked on the hardware (hinges, handles and screws): cleaning, treatment and servicing so they stop rusting and the door works smoothly and closes properly.

RESULT

Antique doors, yes — but solid and with life in them for many years to come.

AFTER

Restoration of doors on a farmhouse on the outskirts of Llucmajor

2018

These doors came from a farmhouse on the outskirts of Llucmajor. The same process as always: handcrafted work. If the wood has been through the mill, you have to go step by step until it's sound and protected.

BEFORE
Lo que se hizo - Puertas saneadas

What was done

  1. I

Full stripping to remove old layers and assess the real condition of the wood.

  2. II

Reconstruction of the damaged sections, replacing what was beyond saving with matching wood.

  3. III

Complete woodworm and insect treatment to cut the problem at the root.

  4. IV

Final finish with a specialist exterior product, designed to withstand harsh conditions: sun, moisture and temperature changes.

RESULT

Doors treated, reconstructed and protected to last outdoors.

AFTER

Reconstruction of a batiport in Orient, Serra de Tramuntana

2020

This work was in Orient, deep in the Serra de Tramuntana, and it was one of the complex ones. The piece is a batiport — the interior wooden frame that surrounds the door — and it arrived in very poor condition: insects had eaten it from the inside and the structure could no longer hold. Surface repair was not an option here: everything had to be dismantled piece by piece, reconstructed and reassembled.

BEFORE
Lo que se hizo - Batiport

What was done

  1. I

Full dismantling of the batiport, piece by piece, because the insect damage was so deep that it couldn't be treated without opening everything up.

  2. II

Reconstruction of the damaged parts, replacing what was beyond saving while respecting the original structure.

  3. III

Complete treatment against insects (woodworm and xylophages) to eliminate the problem at the root.

  4. IV

Finish with open-pore wood stain (lasur), which lets the wood breathe and protects it without covering the grain.

  5. V

Final coat of natural oils to nourish the wood and give it a warm, lasting finish.

RESULT

Batiport reconstructed from scratch: solid structure, sound wood, treated against insects and with a natural finish that respects the piece and protects it for years.
